Letter From The President

Dear Friends,

Congestion Issues and the East Side Solution

The advent of summer brings to the forefront the critical issue of congestion. As vacationers take to the highways, our nation’s freight will share increasingly precious highway capacity and the resulting congestion, already costing our nation some $200 billion a year, according to Norman Mineta, U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Rest assured, when the vacations are over, the issue of congestion will have only grown worse.

Greg Hanson

There are many proposed solutions, some of which are innovative, all of which are years, if not decades away. Now, more than ever, consumer product companies and distributors must take a long view at the price of congestion — in terms of time, fuel, labor and assets — when evaluating their supply chain. “Heart of the market” locations are no longer ideal if that market is tangled in bottlenecks and overburdened highway systems.

Chicago, you might successfully argue, can be better serviced from outside of Chicago. Taking that one step further, the east side of the sprawling Chicago metropolis is better than the west side, because the east side offers quick access to the Windy City, but also affords additional distribution via congestion-free east and southbound lanes.

East beats West? In Chicago, the answer is “Yes, We Can!” Call me for additional information on why we believe in the East Side Solution.

Sincerely,

Gregory P. Hanson
