How to Organize a Storage Unit in 8 Easy Steps

You bought a storage unit so that you’d have a place to store items that won’t fit anywhere else or that you don’t need on a daily basis. The problem is when you need access to one – or more – of those things, and can’t find it because the unit is in disarray.

If that’s the case, it’s time to organize your unit to make it easy to find and access things when you need them. Here are some tips:

1. Make use of shelving

Freestanding shelving is an easy way to make the most of your space – especially if it’s a smaller space. Shelves can hold large boxes, trinkets, etc.

2. Stick with one box size, if possible

Using the same size boxes helps for stacking and accessibility. Large boxes are good for storing items that aren’t heavy but are more difficult to remove from a stack if you need something their contents.

3. Arrange items according to size

Placing your larger items closest to the walls and smaller items in front is a good organizing strategy for your storage unit. Also, you should store large furniture items vertically and stack chairs.

4. Use rubber totes

Rubber totes are great for protecting your items from water, sunlight, and other types of damage. Feel free to use totes of different sizes and label accordingly.

5. Keep a masters content list

A masters content list is particularly helpful when you need to find a specific item in a hurry, or at any time. The list should include the number of each box and its contents. Be as detailed as possible when listing each box’s contents.

6. Have an organized layout

A little pre-planning goes a long way toward helping you organize your storage unit, and that includes have an organized layout in mind before you begin to store items. It’s especially important if you plan to access your storage unit frequently.

One strategy is to store your furniture against the wall on the other side of your unit from boxes to create a path in the middle. Place your most moveable items in the center if you must use that space.

7. Label accordingly

Labeling is your friend as you organize your storage unit. That said, label each box on the top and one of the sides with: a unique number, where it came from, and its contents. You may also use a special mark to indicate those boxes that you need to access more than others (while placing them in a spot that you can access quickly and easily.

8. Unpack and re-pack, if necessary

Starting over is sometimes a great option when organizing your storage unit. If you have boxes that are unlabeled and filled with whatever fit conveniently into them, it’s a worthwhile time investment to unpack them and then repack their items in boxes with similar contents.
